Why Dermaplaning Makes Your Skincare Products Actually Work
Ever look at your bathroom shelf, piled high with expensive serums and lush moisturisers, and wonder if they’re actually doing… anything? You follow the steps, you pat it all in, but the glow-up you were promised feels more like a glow-nope.
I see it all the time. You've invested in great products, but there's an invisible barrier sabotaging your results. The culprit? A cosy little layer of dead skin cells and fine peach fuzz.
Think of dermaplaning as the ultimate reset button. It’s the deep clean your skin has been begging for, clearing the way so your skincare can finally get to work.
So, What Exactly Is This Magic?
Let's cut through the jargon. Dermaplaning is a non-invasive skin treatment where I use a sterile, hospital-grade blade to gently glide over your skin. This isn't your average exfoliation. It's a precise technique that lifts away weeks of dead skin buildup and, as a very welcome bonus, all that vellus hair (the proper term for peach fuzz).
You might leave my studio with a little bit of redness, but there’s zero downtime. You can get on with your day as usual, no need to hide away for a week. It’s one of the best ways to get an instant refresh without the commitment of a more intense procedure. It is my absolute favourite skin treatment for a reason.
And Let's Bust The Biggest Myth Right Now
No, your peach fuzz will not, I repeat, will not grow back as a full-blown beard. It’s scientifically not possible. The vellus hair on your face is super fine and only grows from the second layer of skin. Shaving it off at the surface doesn’t change its structure, so it grows back exactly as it was: soft and fine. Easy.
Just a note: This treatment is for peach fuzz only. Hairs that are darker or thicker, usually around the hormonal areas like the lip and chin, can't be removed with the blade and are better suited for waxing or laser.
The Real Reason Your Skincare Isn't Hitting the Mark
Imagine trying to paint a dusty, uneven wall. You can have the highest quality, most expensive paint, but if the surface isn’t smooth and clean, the finish will be patchy and disappointing. Your face is that wall, and your skincare is that expensive paint.
That layer of dead skin cells and peach fuzz creates a physical barrier. Your serums and creams end up sitting on top of this layer, struggling to penetrate to the fresh, new skin cells underneath where they can actually make a difference. It’s a bit of a tragic waste of good product, isn't it?
How Dermaplaning Unlocks Your Skincare's Full Potential
By removing that top layer of buildup, we create a perfectly smooth, clear canvas. Suddenly, there’s nothing standing in the way of optimal product penetration. This is where you get that real JAG Studio glow.
Here’s what happens next:
- Improved Skincare Absorption: With the barrier gone, your products can sink deep into the skin. That Vitamin C serum? It’s finally reaching the layers where it can fight free radicals. That hyaluronic acid? It's hydrating the cells that actually need it.
- Targeting Skin Concerns: If you've been working on specific issues like acne scarring or pigmentation, post-dermaplaning is the golden hour. Applying targeted treatments to freshly exfoliated skin means they work harder and more effectively, and you'll notice a bigger difference in how your skin feels and looks over time.
- Flawless Makeup Application: As a makeup artist, this is one of my favourite benefits. Without peach fuzz and texture, your foundation glides on like a dream. It sits on your skin, not on your hair, creating a seamless, airbrushed finish. This is why so many of my clients book in for this treatment ahead of receiving a professional makeup application.
Getting the Most Out of Your Glow-Up
To keep that fresh-faced feeling going, a little bit of care goes a long way. The rules for before and after your treatment are exactly the same. Think of it as a seven-day pamper window on either side of your appointment.
Your 7-Day Care Guide (Before & After)
- DO: Wear a broad-spectrum SPF every single day. We’ve just revealed beautiful new skin cells, and we need to protect them. This is non-negotiable!
- DO: Use gentle, hydrating products. Think soothing cleansers, nourishing moisturisers, and hydrating serums.
- AVOID: Heavy sun exposure. Your skin will be more sensitive, so keep it shaded.
- AVOID: Retinols, AHAs, BHAs, and any other chemical or physical exfoliants. Your skin has just had the ultimate exfoliation; give it a break.
How Often Should You Do It?
Dermaplaning isn't a one-and-done miracle. It's a maintenance treatment that delivers the best results when done consistently. I recommend booking in every 4-6 weeks to align with your skin’s natural cell turnover cycle. This keeps skin smooth and ready to absorb all that goodness you’re feeding it.
It’s especially amazing for anyone preparing for a big event. Many of my beautiful clients love getting this treatment in the lead-up to their wedding day. It ensures their skin is in peak condition for that flawless bridal makeup look that lasts all night.
